How to break into the game development industry as a newcomer

People ask me all the time how they can get noticed in the game development or programming industry.

The answer is pretty simple, and that is start building projects right away as soon as you have your first idea. Don’t wait.

Sometimes as designers, we are sticklers for preparations. We want to make sure that we have all of our ducks in a row before you get started coding. Don’t fall into this trap — just get started.

As the old Chinese proverb goes: “The best time to plant a tree was 20 years ago. The second best time is now.”

But, I don’t know how I will put my game together as I didn’t plan everything out.

It does not matter. You just need to get started, and everything will connect perfectly along the way.

I see this tendency with new developers a lot. They need to plan out every single aspect of their game, every little detail before they start to work on the game, which eventually leads them to quit the idea that hey had.

Even if you have a simple idea for creating some game mechanics like making a player double jump, create a video about it and post it on youtube.

Of course, we are not all born to be tutors. But you can write your code down and then explain it part by part in a video.

You won’t believe how many job offers I got just from people who watched my youtube videos. I did a lot of small fixes on projects which paid $150 per hour. I was invited to Spain, USA, Germany and other countries which names I forgot.

Heck, I once wrote a 10 line JSON weather parsing app for iOS and uploaded it on GitHub and got a job offer because of that.

The main point is that you start putting things out right away. Be that a game, an app, a web application or a small piece of code that creates some mechanic in a game or an app.

Just get it out to the world so that someone can discover your talent.

The best part about putting things out frequently is the fact that you will learn more. The more you practice, the more you will learn, and the more chances you will have to work in the game development or programming industry.
